Poster analysis 1- The Conjuring

Purpose
The purpose of this horror film poster is to attract a specific audience and thus the demographic of the this film. This is done through a variety of methods, most obvious being the central image for the poster, and the large title that seems to dominate the poster due to the pearl font colour contrasting with the dark, dank image behind it.

Colours
The dark, dull colours of this trailer at that which reflect the tone and mood of the film, which is quite conventional for a horror film such as this. The candid shot of the young girl has tension in itself, but by using quite dead colours that connote a paranormal state the audience gain a greater in site as to the film.

Key image
The key image for this film poster is both a simple and effective, the single posed image used is interesting as it is as though it is verging upon being a candid shot, with the girl sat in the chair facing away from the camera and the doll turned to stare straight at us. This shot conveys a sense of not only fear but worry for the girl, which again pushes the viewer to question what this film is about, making them more interested in watching the film themselves.

Background
The background to this poster is again very simplistic, the right angle corner of a room is featured, with dank walls and a cracked floor. These aspects connote an atmosphere about this films style and content to the audience. The top and bottom of the image are fading into black, by doing this it makes the writing that fills this space must more clear and easy to read from a distance.

Realism
As my genre analysis shows this particular style of film focuses around the idea of making the unimaginable a reality, in this film we can see a small doll become a demonic soul that toys with the characters lives.

Text colour and Font
This simple, black and white poster is an incredibly powerful method of portraying the tone of the film, it allows the audience to understand that this horror will draw the happiness and colour out of the lives of the protagonists.

Target Audience
In my opinion this film is focused at attracting a middle aged group, this is due to the horrific nature of some of the scenes, as well as the intellectual understanding needed to be able to fully comprehend the story line and the twists that go alongside it.
